On the 12th  of September 1973, Sandton City Mall (as it was then known) opened its doors
to the public. The brand-new shopping complex was the vision of property company Rapp and Maister, who seized the opportunity to expand its residential development in a suburb that was officially proclaimed a municipality by the Johannesburg City Council in 1969. After securing the rights to build a high-rise apartment block with commercial space to rent, construction soon began on what would become the largest retail development in Johannesburg. And the rest, as they say, is history.
